Following a powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Russia on July 30, tsunami warnings were issued across several regions, including Hawaii. Residents were urged to stay away from the shore and evacuate to higher ground as a precaution.
Social media quickly became a hub for updates and reactions, with one widely viewed post—now with over 2.7 million views—alleging that media personality Oprah Winfrey had kept a private road closed on her property in Maui, hindering evacuation efforts.
The post claimed, “People in Maui, Hawaii are trying to escape the tsunami and are begging Oprah to open the private road on her property. She’s reportedly still refusing. In a crisis, blocking an escape route is inhumane.” A map and video of traffic congestion were also shared alongside the claim.
Additional users echoed the concern, suggesting that opening the road could have eased congestion and improved access to higher ground.
Later, the original poster added an update, stating that “after public pressure and intervention from President Trump, Oprah has opened her private road to support emergency access.” They also noted that her team appeared to be addressing the issue publicly.
However, a spokesperson for Winfrey refuted the claims, telling Newsweek:“As soon as we heard the tsunami warnings, we contacted local law enforcement and FEMA to ensure the road was opened. Any reports otherwise are false.”
Local authorities appeared to support this statement. The Maui Police Department issued a tsunami update noting that “Oprah’s road is available to get Upcountry.”
Winfrey’s property is located on the slopes of Haleakalā, a dormant volcano on Maui. In past emergencies, including wildfires in 2019 and 2023, she had opened the same private road to help residents reach safer areas.
Hawaii Governor Josh Green also addressed the situation, telling reporters:“So far we have not seen a wave of consequence, which is a great relief to us. We expect it to be about two to three more hours before we can call ‘all clear.’ So far though, at the moment, so good.”
As of the latest update, tsunami warnings for Hawaii have been downgraded, and evacuees have been told it is safe to return to their homes. Only minor wave activity was recorded.
Former President Donald Trump also commented on the event via social media, encouraging residents to monitor official sources for updates:“Due to a massive earthquake that occurred in the Pacific Ocean, a Tsunami Warning is in effect for those living in Hawaii. Please visit tsunami.gov for the latest information. Stay strong and stay safe!”
