Caring for a dog with special needs can come with challenges—but it can also be one of the most rewarding experiences a person will ever have. Sadly, not all animals with disabilities get the chance to experience that kind of love.
Lunita, a sweet, medium-sized dog in Salta, Argentina, was left alone on the sidewalk one cold morning in May 2014. Her back legs were paralyzed, and she had been strapped into a broken wheelchair. Beside her was a handwritten note stating her name, age, and a brief message explaining that her former owners could no longer care for her. There was no food or water—just Lunita, lying patiently and quietly on the street.
Fortunately, a nearby dog groomer noticed her and contacted LUBA Salta, a local animal rescue organization. Volunteers responded quickly, and Lunita was soon brought to a shelter and placed in a foster home. Her story was posted online, and for a time, there were few signs of interest—until a family in the United States reached out, wanting to adopt her.
Thanks to a successful fundraiser, Lunita was transported to her new home abroad. Sadly, her first adoptive family lacked experience with dogs who require special care, and Lunita developed a number of medical complications. She suffered from a severe skin infection, scabies, and other painful conditions that left her underweight and in distress.

But her story didn’t end there.
Lunita was later welcomed into a new, more experienced home where she received the dedicated medical attention and compassion she needed. Slowly but surely, she began to heal. With her new family, she gained strength, regained her spirit, and finally got to enjoy life the way she deserved.
She saw snow for the first time. She traveled, made new friends, and even celebrated birthdays—with cake and all. Her 11th birthday in June 2018 was filled with joy, surrounded by people and pets who cared for her deeply.
Unfortunately, shortly after that celebration, Lunita’s health declined. Despite intensive care and the best efforts of her veterinary team, her condition worsened. When it became clear that her pain could not be eased, her family made the difficult but compassionate decision to say goodbye.
Lunita passed peacefully, surrounded by love.

Her adoptive mom later wrote: “I will never forget her and how much she meant to me. She changed my life forever. I loved her so much.”
Though Lunita’s early years were filled with hardship, her final chapter was one of comfort, adventure, and dignity. Her life reminds us that every animal—no matter their condition—deserves a chance to be loved.
Lunita’s journey is a powerful reminder that kindness and patience can change everything. Rest in peace, sweet girl.
